EXHIBITION
 INDONESIAN BATIK

  "A Living Heritage"
        25 January - 6 February 2012

The Exhibition Indonesian Batik “A Living heritage” pays homage to one of the most enchanting art forms found in Indonesia. Not without reason did UNESCO award Indonesian Batik the title “A Cultural Heritage” in 2009. Batik has a very special place in the world of textile. No other cloth in the Indonesian archipelago, perhaps in the entire world, is so rich in symbolism and meaning. Through the philosophy of its color and design, and the way it is made, folded and worn, batik expresses the spirit of the people who create it and wear it and who treasure it as part of their heritage.

The concept of the exhibition then includes to build a bridge between the appreciation of Batik in Indonesia and to interlink it with its artistic influence in Europe, especially in Germany, where Batik has a surprisingly long tradition and the contemporary use of Batik which can be found in architectural interpretation of Batik, allegorized in a project realized in London by Indonesian architect, modern automotive design, shown by Batik car of Mercedes Benz and fashion as displayed as contemporary Batik by Iwan Tirta and European Batik artists.

Jakarta Biennale is an international art event held every two years. Since 1968, Jakarta Biennale has been held 14 times. If 2009 and then we picked up the theme ARENA, this year we held # 14.2011 Jakarta Biennale with the theme of "Maximum City".

Implementation of the Biennale, as a venue for art, internationally agreed benchmark achievement as art in general, and the fine arts in particular. There was also a measure of the progress of a city or a nation. This is of course based on the relationship between art and the city that affect each other. Good art requires a conducive place to grow and develop. Conversely, a more advanced city, duly providing space for art. In this context, Jakarta Biennale is important to remain there, even growing.

Jakarta Biennale #14.2011 this time presenting the works of artists from within and abroad. Their works are exhibited in art galleries, parks, museums, malls to highways. For the sake of maximum utilization, art is no longer survive in an ivory tower and enjoyed a handful of people. But everywhere, for all of us. With so expect the equity and increase people's appreciation of art, so it can better contribute to development of the city.

Raden Saleh

RADEN SALEH (1807 – 1880)
